Seven Days in September – Day 5

07 Sep

worldtradecentertowersfrombelow

The day is Thursday, September 6th, 2001.

While keeping an eye on the weather, as a potential storm builds off the coast, life goes on as normal.  The MTV Video Music Awards are on tonight.  The Yankees expect to win, as ace Roger Clemons take the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays.  The NFL season had started one week prior, so talk of the Jets and Giants hopes for the new year was common.

One more day till the weekend, the common workingman’s mantra, was in minds from the trading floors of Wall Street, to the longshoremen on the docks, to the Teachers in schools beginning a new academic year.  Just another day in normal American life.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., President Bush prepares for his upcoming trip to Florida.  The Justice Department and Security and Exchange Commission announce they are no longer pursuing forced breakup of software giant Microsoft corporation in response to anti-trust litigation.

Despite the potential of weather from the sea, normal airline traffic continues.  Among the days passengers are two men:  Abdulaziz al-Omari and Satam al-Suqami, not American citizens, but have been in Florida for flight training for weeks.  These men take flights from Florida to Boston, MA.  where their instructions are to find a hotel and await instructions.

On the other side of the world, a man listens to an adviser.  He receives a report that the planning for what will in Six days be forever known as “The Planes Operation” is complete and the day for execution has been chosen.

As night falls on a Nation looking forward to the rest and relaxation of the coming weekend, little did they know that in the coming week, their lives would change forever.

As of this night, the World Trade Center has 120 hours left in it’s existence.
